After a little hassle getting the correct size, I finally got the 5.10 baron's in a size 12. These shoes (and the freerider line of shoes) seem to run a half size small. With the impact and karver shoes, they are pretty true to their size. Anyways, with my old skate shoes on one foot and these on another, it was a world of difference as far as grip-ability and comfort goes. These shoes simply could not come off the pedals unless you lifted your foot directly off, unlike the skate shoes. In fact, I took these shoes on a pretty rough trail recently and even with rain and mud on the pedals and shoes, there was no slippage whatsoever. These do take a while to dry out since there is a lot of padding in the tongue and side of the shoe, but would rather that then flimsy padding. I have also tried on my friends Karvers before and rode around on them, but they felt very bulky and clunky, almost like boots. It was a nice transition from skate shoes to the baron's which have the sticky sole, but are burly with the toe protection.Note: Take a few rides on these shoes before you go all out, since the sticky rubber takes a while to get used to. Finding the sweet spot for my foot was easy on the skate shoes since I could slide my feet around on the pedals, but not the case with these! Definitely a plus not having slipping but make sure you plant your foot on the pedal how you want it before you get going.5.10 did a great job with the freerider line of shoes for 2011, by adding the stitching to the sole for extra durability. I look forward to riding these shoes for many years to come! Get these shoes, you won't be disappointed!

And they have great support and comfort that you would expect in a gym shoe. Not that flimsy slipper like water shoe, but just as light. I bought these for my husband and liked them so much I bought myself a pair! They do run small so go up a half size.
